1987: Bullet the blue sky

“Bullet the Blue Sky” is the fourth track from U2‘s 1987 album, The Joshua . Although never released as a single, “Bullet the Blue Sky” has been played at nearly every one of the band’s live concerts since its first performance at the opening night of the Joshua Tree Tour on April 2, 1987. The song is one of the band’s most overtly politically toned songs, with live performances often being heavily critical of war and guns.
Amazing when you think about the fact that they released this ablum as a CD and it jumped way up in sales.

Bullet The Blue Sky

This song has been played at the following 646 shows on the Joshua Tree Tour

Bullet The Blue Sky lyrics

In the howling wind comes a stinging rain
See it driving nails
Into the souls on the tree of pain
From the firefly, a red orange glow
See the face of fear
Running scared in the valley below

Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue
Bullet the blue

In the locust wind comes a rattle and hum
Jacob wrestled the angel
And the angel was overcome
You plant a demon seed
You raise a flower of fire
See them burning crosses
See the flames higher and higher

Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue sky
Bullet the blue
Bullet the blue

This guy comes up to me
His face red like a rose on a thorn bush
Like all the colors of a royal flush
And he’s peeling off those dollar bills
Slapping them down
One hundred, two hundred
And I can see those fighter planes
And I can see those fighter planes
Across the mud huts where the children sleep
Through the alleys of a quiet city street
You take the staircase to the first floor
Turn the key and slowly unlock the door
As a man breathes into a saxophone
And through the walls you hear the city groan
Outside is America
Outside is America

Across the field you see the sky ripped open
See the rain through a gaping wound
Pounding on the women and children
Who run
Into the arms
Of America

1984:(Pride) In The Name Of Love

This week we will travel back to 1984. I have select two songs from 1984. Pride and I Will Follow.

Pride (In the Name of Love)” is the second song on U2‘s 1984 album The Unforgettable Fire and was released as the album’s first single. Written about Martin Luther King, Jr., “Pride” is one of the band’s most recognized songs, and appeared as the opening track on the compilation The Best of 1980-1990, and on the 2006 compilation U218 Singles. The song was a mixed critical but major commercial success for the band and has since come to be regarded as one of the band’s best songs. It was named the 378th greatest song by Rolling Stone on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

U2 — “War” (1983)

For some strange reason, “War” is considered the high-water mark of their early work as a band. It replaced Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” at the top of the charts, becoming the band’s first #1 album in the UK. There were three huge singles in America and the record was eventually ranked number 221 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Objectively, “War” was U2’s worst album until 1997’s “” came along. Admittedly, the first three tracks are excellent. The record kicks off with the martial-drum intensity of “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” then segues into atmospheric nuclear nightmare “Seconds,” and…yet another atmospheric nuclear nightmare (not to mention one of their best songs), the classic “New Year’s Day.” At this point we’re running full steam.
